P.E Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement

Curriculum Lead Teacher: Mrs Parsonage

The school believes that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is vital and unique in its contribution to a pupil’s physical and emotional development and health. The physical education curriculum aims to provide for pupils’ increasing self-confidence through an ability to manage their bodies successfully in a variety of situations, for example: climbing, jumping, running, hopping and skipping etc.

At St Gabriel’s we are fortunate to have a full time coach from Premier Sports who delivers the PE curriculum in all year groups.

The children also have a wide range of after school sporting activities to offer to them via the Schools After School Club.

Through the children’s hard work and commitment, St Gabriel’s has got a fantastic, very competitive football team.

Children from all age groups have an opportunity to represent school by entering various sporting competitions throughout the year.

Intent

At St Gabriel’s we aim to deliver a high quality learning opportunity that enables children to be the best they can be. We aim for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and give children the opportunity to participate in a range of sports. We also aim for children to make informed decisions to live a healthy lifestyle now and in their future. We aim for children to have high expectations of themselves and to be ambitious about their future.

Through our 5 year vision and school core values we encourage our children to have the courage to try new sports, show responsibility by representing the school, show effort by trying our best and show respect by winning or losing graciously.

Swimming is an important life skill. We aspire for all children to leave St Gabriel’s being able to swim at least 25 metres independently.

Implementation

  • We have a full, rich curriculum, which is enhanced by extra-curricular clubs and activities that increase children’s physical activity.
  • Children participate in high-quality PE lessons that are delivered by a specialist sports coach.
  • All classes follow the PE Long Term Plan to ensure children participate in a variety of sports and there is a progression of skills.
  • Children participate in a variety of competitive sports. Children from Reception to Year 6 attend LLG sporting events.
  • Children attend swimming lessons in Years 3, 4, and those that need additional lessons in Year 6.
  • Our whole-school Sports day includes lots of intra-school competition.
  • All children participate in sport and enjoy all it has to offer without any costs to families.

Impact

Our pupils are physically active and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise. All children enjoy PE lessons and develop a love of sport and physical activity. All pupils understand the values and importance of fair play and being a good sportsperson. All pupils are expected to leave school with the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25 metres competently.

So far this year school has entered these competitions:

  • Curling Y1/2
  • Hockey Year 5/6
  • Basketball Year 5/6
  • Dodgeball Year 3/4
